Mail Art – Moleskine Journal Exchange

If you’ve been reading my posts here, you know I have a passion for “Mail Art.” Here is yet another face of “Mail Art” – the “Moley Exchange.” I was invited to join a Moley Exchange on my Artist Trading Card site. First you buy a moleskine journal. There are lots of wonderful styles available in these journals - for this project we use the Japanese folding journal. It’s small – 3.5 x 5.5 and 60 pages of acordian folded paper. (Actually only 30 since we won’t be using the back sides).

There are 10 artists in this group – each gets 3 pages. We each pick a theme and draw our theme on the first 3 pages. Then we mail it to the next person and they draw something in our theme on the next 3 pages. By next year, I will get my moley returned to me filled with wonderful art! The group is full of fantastic artists with all kinds of styles. It’s going to be a great experience to see what they create… and I will have a work of art to cherish forever.

I had never heard of something like this before I joined the Artist Trading Card sites. I find it so much fun, super challenging and creatively inspiring. My theme is Halloween. Pretty simple, I love Halloween – and not the cutesy side of Halloween. Other themes in our group include “Outsider Art/Dreamscapes”, “Dark Fairy Tales”, “Dark Art/Found Poetry” and one that is going to challenge me: “Mistress Mayhem’s Orbacular Tentacular Spectacular with Zombies.”

Above is my 3 pages I’ve just completed in my Halloween theme: (Notice the ghost kitty! Also see the runes – they spell out “Skyjules,” my screen name on the site)

There is also a nice back pocket we can use. I decorated it as well as the inside cover and front page. This is where we talk about what we want the other artists to draw and add the mail route so they know who to mail it to next. Here is my instruction pages, guest sign in and “back door” (the pocket). I think I’ll put some trick-r-treats of some kind in there for each artist. Art that we mail. “Mail Art!”

Art-o-Mat

Art-o-mat machines are retired cigarette vending machines that have been converted to vend art!
There are over 90 active machines in various locations throughout the country. We have one in Houston and a friend and I will be visiting soon…photos to follow of course!

Visit the Art-o-Mat site to see if there is one near you! There is also a list of the artists who have art in the vending machines with sample images of their work. And for the truly inspired – info on how you too can be an Art-o-Mat Artist!

July Clouds

I have not created any mirrored clouds lately, but we had such wonderful big Texas rain storms in July I shot some clouds. I call this “The Separation.” It has dove like or angelic imagery. I love it when the clouds have that inner glow.

When I was a little kid, I think it was about 3rd grade. I had to memorize a poem to say in front of the class. Mom gave me a greeting card with a poem on it and I remember it to this day:

Though outwardly a gloomy shroud,
The inner half of every cloud
Is bright and shining:
I therefore turn my clouds about
And always wear them inside out
To show the lining.

Pumpkins and Skulls

It’s never too early for Halloween I always say!

I’m hosting a new Artist Trading Card swap over at ATCsforAll.com called “Pumpkins and Skulls – A Dark Halloween Swap.”

Here are some ATC’s that I drew in color pencil, ink and a little watercolor. I chose the theme to get people to create spookier cards instead of cutsie cartoony cards. I’m into the spookier side of Halloween! The card on the left has silver watercolor on the wall. It is somewhat reflective in person and turned out so nice, I think I’ll use it on more cards.

The due date for cards to be sent in is October 5th. Which leaves plenty of time for mailing the trades back (especially internationally) to receive them in time to display for Halloween!

I joined another Halloween Swap…this one with a theme of “Happy” Halloween…

Interiors Exteriors

I’ve started a new theme. I was drawing lots of fruit and veggies for a while, now I’m into interiors and exteriors. As with a lot of art, it came by accident. I was waiting in the parking lot outside the office of some apartments my mom was interesting in checking out. I was early and it was raining so I stayed in the car. I pulled out my tin box of pens and blank ATCs and passed the time drawing. The first drawing with the iron fencing was what I drew – behind the fence were buildings, so instead I drew my 3 Italian Cypress on a hill – they seem to show up in many of my drawings.

Mom called wondering where I was, turns out I was in the wrong complex. But the landscaping inspired me on a spree of drawing interiors and exteriors with ink and watercolor. The exteriors are drawn from real life, the interiors are mostly all in my mind.
